Kubis, during his meeting with representatives of the Youth Dialogue Forum in Tripoli, reaffirms the position of the Security Council.

Tripoli, November 26, 2021 (LANA) - The UN envoy, "Jan Kubis", met at the headquarters of the mission in the capital, Tripoli, on Thursday, "representatives of the Youth Dialogue Forum", in the presence of the Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and the Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Libya, Georgette Gagnon.

 According to a statement published by the mission on its official website, representatives of the Youth Dialogue Forum delivered an invitation to the United Nations to attend the National Youth Conference that will be held in Tripoli on November 27 under the slogan “This is our time.”

Youth representatives briefed Kubis and Gagnon on their efforts to lead a national and societal reconciliation that goes from the bottom to the top, as well as their efforts to promote tangible youth participation in the political life of Libya, especially through the upcoming elections on December 24.

In a speech during the meeting, Kubis expressed his "admiration for the unified efforts of the Youth Forum and their determination to be real actors in change by engaging in political life for a better future for Libya and the Libyan people."

The Special Envoy reiterated the position of the Security Council, "which was reflected in the statement issued by the presidency of the Council on November 24, which calls for the necessity of holding parliamentary and presidential elections on December 24, 2021, as contained in the road map approved by the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum and Resolution 2570 of 2021."

He stressed that “only free, fair and credible elections will allow the Libyan people, especially youth and women, to elect their true representatives, including themselves, and enter political life as a critical catalyst and force for change capable of transforming the political environment and culture, and ultimately contributing to effectively - setting Libya on the path to democracy, stability, unity and prosperity.

He said that “young people, including women, are the ones who have to shape Libya’s future for themselves and the future generation,” stressing that this political democratic process also provides a unique opportunity that should not be missed, “despite all the differences, risks and unknowns surrounding the elections.”

Kubis added that “the wave of voters and registered candidates is evidence that the majority of the country’s population understands this, and that refraining from participating in the elections for any reason, even for very good reasons, would allow others, especially the parties to the status quo and their supporters, to determine the future of Libya, neglecting and ignoring the aspirations and needs of the younger generations, including women.”
