Washington, 24 November 2021 (Lana) The embassies of France, Germany, Italy, United Kingdom and the United States of America in Libya on Wednesday called on all Libyan parties to commit to holding free, fair, comprehensive and credible presidential and parliamentary elections on December 24, 2021, and urged all international actors to encourage and support a democratic transition.

In a joint statement, the five embassies confirmed their intention to support stability in Libya through a Libyan-led and facilitated political process.

The statement said: "the embassies of France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States of America in Libya have been informed of the announcement by the High National Election Commission that the registration procedures for candidates in the upcoming presidential elections in Libya will be completed. As has already been clear with the level of voter registration, the large number of applications submitted is a further evidence of the Libyan people's determination to actively participate in the democratic process."

The statement expressed support of the five embassies to the "judicial review of the nominations, and called on all actors to respect their decisions.

The statement welcomed the efforts of the High National Election Commission to implement the technical basis for successful elections, and looked forward to formalizing full electoral calendar by the Commission".

The High National Election Commission closed the door to receiving applications for the presidential elections on November 22, and the files of 98 candidates are being reviewed and scrutinized in preparation for the announcement of the final lists of candidates.
