Washington, September 11, 2021 (LANA) - Britain stressed the need to hold the Libyan elections on time, vowing to take measures against anyone who deliberately obstructs the political and electoral process in the country.

This came in a speech delivered by its Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Barbara Woodward, during a session of the Security Council on Friday on the situation developments in Libya.

Woodward said, "Time is running out to agree on the legal basis for holding the elections. We are at a dangerous juncture, and there is a clear demand from the Libyan people to participate in the elections."

The British official stressed that it has become "necessary and pivotal, the agreement of the circles of power in Libya" in order to complete the electoral process and conduct it on time, with the need for everyone to adhere to the results of the polls and respect the will of the voters.

Woodward appreciated the parliament’s efforts to reach a solution to the issue of the election law, and to work on holding presidential and parliamentary elections on December 24.

She also stressed the importance of women's participation in the upcoming elections, stressing the UK's commitment to supporting women in their full, equal and real participation in elections and providing them with the opportunity as a voter, candidate and decision-maker in the upcoming political process, she said.
