The US and German foreign ministers stress the holding of the Libyan elections on time and the exit of foreign forces and mercenaries from the country.

Berlin, June 23, 2021 (LANA) - Germany and the United States of America stressed the importance of holding the elections to be held in Libya next December and the exit of all foreign forces and mercenaries in the country.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said today, Wednesday, after his meeting with his American counterpart, "Anthony Blinken" on the sidelines of the "Berlin 2 Conference" on Libya, "We want Libya to find lasting peace and stability... For this we want to determine the right path and ensure international support." The conference also focused on the withdrawal of foreign forces and the unification of Libyan security forces, he added.

For his part, US Secretary of State "Blinken" stressed that the United States and Germany are seeking the same goals in Libya, stressing the need to continue implementing the current ceasefire.

"We have an opportunity that we haven't had in years to really help Libya move towards a secure and sovereign country," Blinken said.

Blinken also stressed that the ceasefire agreement signed on the 23rd of last October must be fully implemented, including the withdrawal of all foreign forces and mercenaries from Libya.

He added, "We share with Germany the goal of making Libya a sovereign, stable, united, secure and free from any foreign interference, this is what the people deserve, and it is necessary for regional security."

The main countries concerned with the Libyan conflict met today, Wednesday, in Berlin, in the framework of a new conference aimed at ensuring the holding of elections in Libya at the end of this year and the exit of foreign forces and mercenaries from this country.

The one-day conference was organized by the German government and the United Nations, and among the participants were the United States, Russia, Turkey, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, as well as the Government of National Unity in Libya.
