Tripoli, 10 June 2021(Lana) EU Ambassador in Libya José Sabadell said rule of law and rebuilding people’s trust in state security institutions will be essential elements in rebuilding Libya.

This came at an event in Tripoli during which GNU Minister of Interior Khaled Mazen,  and EU Ambassador to Libya José Sabadell and UNDP Resident Representative Gerardo Noto inaugurated the model police station in Hay Al Andalus, a quarter of the capital.

The Hay Al Andalus model police station is to set new standards in policing in Libya, Sabadell said.

‘The police station in Hay Al Andalus is one of Tripoli’s largest police stations, serving more than 300,000 people, and over the past two years, the station has been substantially renovated, refurbished and newly equipped, the EU Mission said on its SMS page.

‘The model police station project aims at strengthening the capacity of Libyan security services, and to integrate good practices in community-oriented, citizen focused policing and police organization management under the jurisdiction of the Libyan government, it added.

The Minister of Interior, Mr. Khaled Mazen, declared: "Our celebration of this edifice is not in the beauty of its design, nor in the quality of its furnishings and assets. Rather, our happiness stems from it being the illuminating spot through which the entire international community has partnered with us to advance security in Libya."

The EU Border Assistance Mission (EUBAM)  contributed to the set-up of the model police station through training and advice on best practices in community policing. The collaboration with Libyan authorities aimed at creating protection mechanisms for citizens and also a safe working environment for police officers, the Mission said in an SMS report.
