Libya Recovers Statue From Greek Era Smuggled From Libya in 2011.

Tripoli, 9 MAY 2021(Lana) Libyan Embassy in London has taken hold of a Greek-era statue which was seized by the British authorities as it was smuggled into the UK back in 2011.

A statement by the Foreign Ministry said the recovery of Persephone statue took place at the headquarters of the Libyan Embassy in London on Tuesday last week, with a handover minute signed by the Libyan Acting Charge D’affairs and the Head of Greek and Roman Department at the British Museum Peter Hugo.

The recovery of the statue has gone through a lengthy process legal, political and technical during which the Embassy held numerous meetings with officials in the British Foreign Ministers, the British Customs, and the British Museum in collaboration with the Libyan Antiquities Department and the Foreign and International Affairs Ministry.

Persephone is one of Greek ancient gods was smuggled from the eastern Libyan ancient town of Shahat ‘Cyrene ‘ which is designated a world heritage site by UNESCO.
