Erdogan and Merkel agree to support the Libyan national unity government.

Ankara, May 5, 2021 (LANA) - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and German Chancellor Angela Merkel agreed to support the Libyan National Unity Government, amid the country's preparations for holding general elections in December 2021.

   The Turkish presidency said, in a statement, that Erdogan and Merkel held virtual talks today, Wednesday, during which they discussed relations between Turkey and Germany and regional issues.

    During the call, according to a statement by the Turkish presidency, Erdogan stressed that his country "will continue to support the national unity government for the sake of Libya's stability," stressing Turkey's willingness to cooperate with Germany in this regard.

   Erdogan, pointed out the necessity of not losing the momentum gained by relations between Turkey and the European Union, and indicated his country's adherence to "its moderate stance at a time when Greece continues its provocative practices."

In turn, the German government media office confirmed that Merkel and Erdogan have agreed to support the Libyan national unity government and strengthen efforts to support the country's population and prepare for general elections.

The German statement added that Merkel told Erdogan that the withdrawal of foreign forces from Libya would be "an important signal."
