Jan Kubis discusses with the African Union efforts to achieve national reconciliation and social cohesion in Libya.

ADDIS ABABA, 14 April, 2021 (Lana) - The Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, Jan Kubis , concluded today his first visit to the African Union in Addis Ababa and his discussions on ways to enhance cooperation of the United Nations and the African Union in support of Libya and the region.

During his visit, "Jan Kubis" met the African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Ambassador Bancul Adiwi, and they agreed to strengthen partnership, coordination and cooperation between the United Nations and the African Union in the interest of the Libyan people, peace, security and sustainable stability in the country and the region.

 The two sides discussed ways to develop cooperation between the United Nations and the African Union in many fields, especially in assisting Libya in its endeavor to achieve national reconciliation and social cohesion, holding national elections on December 24, 2021, and confronting the illegal movement of weapons and armed groups.

The special envoy also met with the African Union Commissioner for Social Affairs, Amira Al-Fadil, where their meeting dealt with a number of issues with a focus on issues of migration and refugees, respect for their rights, respect for international humanitarian law, and activate the role of the tripartite joint working group that includes the African Union, the European Union and the United Nations. Especially the International Organization for Migration and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

The Special Envoy expressed his appreciation for the continuous and strong participation of the African Union in the Libyan dialogue facilitated by the United Nations within the framework of the Berlin process, and for the important role of the African Union in helping Libya achieve lasting peace, security and stability.
