Tripoli, 4 February 2021(Lana) A senior official at the US Africa Command ‘Africom’ has voiced concern of the United States of the role that Russia is playing through the Wagner group in Libya demanding that the mercenaries be withdrawn form Libyan territory immediately.

Groups like Wagner are still destroying effort for progress in Libya and continue to intervene in the Libyan peace process said Africom’s Public Relations Director Christopher Carner.

The US Military Commander stressed Africom’s opposition to foreign intervention in Libya and its support for a Libyan ceasefire agreement including prompt withdrawal of foreign military forces and mercenaries from the country, explaining that this agreement requires departure of Russian proxy forces which are currently estimated at 2000 fighters from Wagner scattered in Libya.

The US official elaborated about the role that the Russian Wagner plays in the African continent, explaining that the issue is a matter of concern for us as regarding the Russian special military group, the Wagner group which is a money maker group that cares only for its own interests often at the expense of the countries that employ it.

Carner called of African states to focus on their self-capabilities instead of employing the Wagner group and be exposed to its predatory exercises, indicating that Russia has increased its engagement with African states to gain a foothold to bolster its internationally-perceived capabilities and increase arms sales as well as gain access to metals and other raw materials.
