New York, 29 January 2021 (Lana) - Libya's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Taher Al-Sunni, reaffirmed full support for the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum in Tunisia and other dialogues, despite reservations from some quarters.

In his speech before the Security Council during its session devoted to discussing the situation in Libya Thursday, Al-Sunni called for all of these dialogues to be integrated and not to be contradictory or competitive, and to ensure work to find comprehensive and applicable political solutions that are consensual and not based on the principle of dominance, exclusion or miss-representation.

In his speech, Al-Sunni said that Libya is too large to be reduced to mere mechanisms for choosing positions, voting percentages and virtual meetings. ‘All the tracks that we have been watching for years, despite their importance, can be considered fragile dialogues, because what we missed and still, the most important dialogue, i.e national reconciliation, which is bound to be the real guarantor of the sustainability of any outputs, and the adoption of a permanent constitution for the country.

The Libyan delegate wondered: What are the assurances for the success of any new authority? what is the difference between the Sukhirat dialogue and Tunis dialogue? had the fundamental problems that obstructed the Libyan Political Accord and the Government of National Accord, been discussed?

He explained that the problem in Libya is not one of sharing power or holding positions. The real problem is that the wounds have not been healed since 2011, so the solution must start from the bases by strengthening social peace, he added.

In his speech, the Libyan delegate renewed the call for the African Union to sponsor the path of national reconciliation immediately and not wait for permission for that, because Africa is the only one that can play this role, because of its previous experiences and its knowledge of the Libyan issue and its specificity.

Al-Sunni also called on the Security Council to send a clear signal to everyone that the priority of any new authority is to respond to the outcome of the Forum for Political Dialogue, and the consensus welcomed by the Libyan people and the international community, to set December 24, as date for holding general elections in the country.
