NHRC Concerned Over Renewal of Clashes South of Tripoli.

Pulbished on:
Tripoli, 16 January 2019(Lana) The National Human Rights Commission has expressed concern over renewal of armed clashes in the Municipality of Gasr Bin Ghashir south of the capital, saying they threaten civilians and property. In a statement, a copy of which was obtained by the Libyan news agency on Wednesday, NHRC demanded all armed groups to refrain from armed escalation, to avoid violence and fighting, and to honour their obligations under the Al Zawiyah Agreement signed on September 4, 2018, and the subsequent agreement for consolidation of the ceasefire and cessation of hostilities against civilians in Tripoli. The Commission warned that the renewed clashes could be used by terrorist organisations, which could exploit the violence and the security vacuum in the capital, to launch terrorist attacks to further disturb the situation and deepen the political and humanitarian crisis. It called on the UN Security Council Sanctions Committee to enforce Council's Resolutions No 2174 and 2259, which call for a travel ban and freezing of assets of perpetrators of actions violating international law, and threatening peace and stability in Libya. The Commission stressed the need for measures to be put in place to end impunity, by activating international mechanisms for tracking and prosecuting violators of the international humanitarian law. =Lana=
